10-24 2023

On October 23, a webinar themed the Opportunities and Challenges for Overseas Investment in the Renewable Energy Sector of Bangladesh: The Case of China, was held online. The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), as the organizer, invited Mr. Yao Wen, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Bangladesh, and Ms. Waseqa Ayesha Khan, Chairperson of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, as chief guests. Mr. Gan Peng, Managing Director of CHINT Solar Bangladesh Limited, was also invited to join this webinar as representative of Chinese energy companies.

Since its operation in 2021, the CHINT Solar Bangladesh has been stick to the strategies of localization and “land comes first” while following the long-termism as guiding philosophy, has acquired progress in several greenfield PV projects. Backed by the rich experience from the development, construction, operations and management in the past years, the company has established strong bound with local partners. In the webinar, Gan Peng shared his opinions and suggestions over the RE market in Bangladesh, as reference to the policy makers of the country.

It is the first time that CPD organized an event of this nature, aiming at setting up a platform where thinktank, stakeholders and policy makers could interchange the opinions and ideas regarding the renewable energy sector. Researchers from CPD, representatives from China Energy Research Society and local bankers joined panels discussions, where they shared experience and understandings to China’s achievements in the renewable energy in the last decades, to the policies and to the challenges that Bangladesh is facing.

As an active advocate to the Belt and Road Initiative, Bangladesh is blessed with rich nature resources and the local PV market is with great potential. However, its development is yet held by the policy and infrastructures. CHINT Solar is willing to introduce its experience and the financial and technical strength, to Bangladesh, bring safer, cleaner, more affordable and accessible green energy to the country and contribute to its energy transition.
